TECHNICAL DATASHEET

Features

  • Alkali resistant: Can be applied to new, dry cement plaster.
  • Excellent penetration: Can penetrate friable and chalky surfaces and bond.
  • Microporous: Does not trap water vapour.
  • Adhesion promoter: Improves adhesion of emulsion paints to difficult substrates.
  • 100% lead free.

Intended Usages

  • To penetrate and bind chalky paint films – interior and exterior.
  • To penetrate and bind friable plasters.
  • To seal porous plasters, brick, concrete, fibre cement and masonite.

Application Details

  • Mixing: Stir before use with a flat paddle to an even consistency. Stir occasionally during use to ensure the correct penetration results.
  • Method: Roller or brush.
  • Thinning: ProGold Mineral Turpentine up to 20% on the first coat for a 2 coat application. 1 Coat application, apply undiluted.
  • Cleaning: Remove as much of the product as possible from the application equipment before cleaning with ProGold Mineral Turpentine.

Conditions:

  • Temperature between 5°C and 40°C.
  • Relative humidity of less than 85%, preferably between 10: 00 and 16: 00.

Drying time:
4-6 hours.
Note:  Higher temperatures will accelerate the drying times (approximately halved for every 10°C increase), whilst lower temperatures will retard the drying time (approximately doubled for every 10°C decrease).

Recoating time:
24 hours to 48 hours maximum at 23°C.

Requirements:
1-2 coats dependent on surface conditions.

Surface Preparations
New, sound plaster:

  • Ensure the plaster is dry.
  • Brush down well to remove as much of the loose material as possible then apply directly.

New, friable plaster:

  • Ensure the plaster is dry.
  • Brush down well to remove as much of the loose material as possible.
  • Apply a coat of Prominent Surface Restorer diluted 20% with ProGold Mineral Turpentine.
  • Apply second coat undiluted.

Friable floor screed:

  • Not recommended.

Chalky paint (thin coat):

  • Apply directly.
  • Do a cross hatch adhesion test to ensure proper binding of the substrate before the final finishing application commences.

Chalky paint (numerous coats):

  • Remove chalkiness by high pressure water washer 180KPA with a rotating nozzle or ProGold General Purpose Cleaner/water mixture (1: 10) and a nylon scrubbing brush.
  • Rinse with clean water, allow drying and apply a coat of Prominent Surface Restorer diluted 20% with ProGold Mineral Turpentine.
  • Apply second coat undiluted.

Lime-wash:

  • Remove chalkiness by high pressure water washer 180KPA with a rotating nozzle or ProGold General Purpose Cleaner/water mixture (1: 10) and a nylon scrubbing brush.
  • Rinse with clean water, allow drying and apply a coat of Prominent Surface Restorer diluted 20% with ProGold Mineral Turpentine.
  • Apply second coat undiluted.
  • In all cases it is important to perform a cross hatch adhesion test to ensure proper binding of the substrate before the final finishing application commences.

Limitations

  • Apply only under specified conditions.
  • Not for use on metal surfaces as a primer or finishing coat.
  • Efficacy with respect to penetrating and bonding on a specific surface must be tested on a small surface before proceeding with the remaining surface area.
  • Product can become thixotropic with time. This however does not affect overall performance.
  • Needs to be overcoated and may not be left as a final coat.
  • Cannot serve as a primer for Prominent Stoep Enamel and Prominent 2-pack epoxies.
  • Not UV stable if not overcoated.
  • Cannot be applied to damp surfaces.
